To The Boys In Red!
(Bathurst High School Basketball Players)

THE CITY LIGHTS WERE NOW IN SIGHT
THE BOYS WERE ALMOST THERE
HEADING HOME TO AN ANXIOUS GROUP
OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO CARED
THE ROADS WERE BAD THAT STORMY NIGHT
BUT THE TEAM WAS IN GOOD HANDS
THERE'S LIGHTS AHEAD, A TRANSPORT CAME
AND GOD CARRIED OUT HIS PLAN
THE BUS SWERVED, THE TRANSPORT CAME
AND THEN TORE THE VAN APART
AND WITH IT TORE A GAPING HOLE
INTO A GRIEVING NATIONS HEART
EIGHT PASSED AWAY THAT HORRIBLE DAY
SO NEAR THEIR DESTINATION
AND LEFT ALL THE FRIENDS AND FAMILIES
LOOKING FOR AN EXPLANATION
WE LOST A WIFE A MOTHER AND TEACHER
AND SEVEN BOYS ADMIRED BY THEIR PIERS
AND SET A CHAIN REACTION
OF BROKEN HEARTS AND TEARS
THE ANGUISH WAS OVERWHELMING
THE PAIN WAS FELT BY ALL
THESE DEAR BOYS LOST THEIR LIVES
FOR THEIR LOVE OF BASKETBALL
A CITY, PROVINCE AND NATION
ALL GRIEVED WITH US THAT WEEK
THOUGH SOME WERE FAR TOO BROKEN
TO EVEN BE ABLE TO SPEAK
WHEN EVERYTHING IS SAID AND DONE
THE FINAL SCRIPTER READ
WE'LL ALWAYS PRAY AND LAUGH SOMEDAY
CAUSE WE LOVED OUR BOYS IN RED

Poem written by a father of one of the girls who lost her boyfriend ... it's beautiful and was at the foot of the stairs at the KC Irving last night.
