Restigouche in History

Progressive Administration a feature of civic life.

Various Town Councils Keep Need of Future As Well As Present In Mind.

Extension and improvement of educational facilities, fire protection, water, sewerage and other municipal services all received timely consideration, progressive policy continued in late years.

Apart from its other blessings Campbellton was fortunate in having, during some of the most important years of its history, a progressive group of councillors in charge of its civic affairs.

Mistakes were made, naturally; but for the most part the administration of the town was carried forward in businesslike fashion and with a spirit of progressiveness all too often lacking in small town civic affairs. The needs of the present were provided with an eye to economy, but the larger needs of the future were also considered. This was demonstrated in connection with several matters, the improvement of educational facilities and the modernizing of the town's fire protection equipment being two examples worthy of mention. Street and sidewalk improvements were also planned as soon as conditions seem to warrant the necessary capital expenditure, and every reasonable effort was made to bring all public services up to the highest standard available revenues would permit.

The net result of this progressive civic government across the years in that the Campbellton of today is as up-to-date in the matter of municipal facilities as any town of its size in the Maritimes. Electric power is available for all likely requirements (including possible new industries); four fine schools and an academy represent adequate educational advantages for several years to come; the present water and sewerage systems would readily provide for a large increase in population; the fire protection organization and apparatus is equal to that of many larger towns, and the present years' program of street and sidewalk improvement will place Campbellton high on the list of towns considered most progressive in this respect.

Later day councils under the aggressive leadership of His Worship Mayor Caldwell, have added to the achievements of other years, and Campbellton today is undoubtedly one of the leading towns in its size in Eastern Canada, not only a progressive community, but a town well prepared for further development and growth.

P.S. The date of this newspaper article is not known but Mayor Caldwell was in office from 1942 - 44.
