Ferry Blessed

Ferry Blessed In First Service Of Kind Here

The first ceremony of its kind to be performed here took place on Sunday afternoon last, when representative citizens from Dalhousie and Miguasha gathered at the local ferry wharf to witness the blessing of the new ferry Providence Transport by Rev. J. A. Godbout, parish priest of Saint John the Baptist congregation here.

Edward Lavoie acted as chairman for the occasion. In his remarks he recalled no ceremony of this nature ever being held here, although it is quite common in other coastal towns.

J. T. Cannon, Town Clerk and Treasurer spoke briefly on behalf of the Town Council. Murray MacKay, president of the Board of Trade, spoke on the need that had been filled by provision of a ferry service between Dalhousie and Miguasha again, and expressed appreciation at the way it had been supported by residents on both sides of the Restigouche. He made special mention of support given by L. S. Henry, Manager of the local N.B.I.P. Company paper mill, and E. A. Rockett, Woodland's Fivision Manager.

Mayor Allain spoke in similr vein, and added that there was yet to be realized another need, that of proper wharf facilities on either sides of the river where the ferry docked.

A touching sermon was delivered by Reev. F.r Villeneuve, missionary priest, following which Rev. Fr. Godbout blessed the ferry and spoke briefly. Captain Allard owner of the ferry promised every service possible.

The Saint John the Baptist Church choir was in attendance and sang several selections during the ceremony. For the occasion a public address system was provided by E. J. Breau and operated by Willard Boudreau. Following the ceremony many of the gathering enjoyed a cruise on the river.

Appreciation was extended to members of the Town Fire Brigade who attended the ceremony in uniform and stood by to assist.
