Good Supply Of Lobster Here

There is a good supply of lobsters on the Campbellton market this week, with the seasonal fish bringing in an average of 40 cents a pound.

In the Bay Chaleur district the quantity of lobsters being landed was said to be well up to the amount last season. However, it was still difficult to know what the price of the fish would be. Some canneries were said to be paying 25 cents a pound for lobsters big and small, but in most cases, no price had been set at all. The shellfish were being delivered to the sheds but no figure had been agreed upon between canner and fishermen.

It was predicted the price would settle somewhere near 25 cents per pound, a little higher than last season. In comparison to the total catch, few lobsters are sold alive in the North Shore market.

More lobster fishermen were trying their luck than ever before, it was said.

It was estimated fishermen in the district were averaging a regulation-size lobster per trap per day, considered a fairly satisfactory catch.

As on the North Shore, the number of traps had increased, with ex-servicemen mainly responsible for it. The gain was said to be particularly noticeable in Grand Manan.

Both the North Shore and Bay of Fundy areas reported loss in traps and gear - sometimes a serious matter - had so far been negligible.
