Restigouche in History
Ten Subscribers

The first system established here was in keeping with the simplicity of that day and generation. There were ten telephones on this system all on the same line. According to records available the subscribers were the following well known business men who have passed away since that time; Dr. D. Murray, Mayor A. E. Alexander, Kilgour Shives and J. Porter Mowat who each had two phones, connecting their homes and their place of businesses. The other two individual subscribers were Dr. Murray and the late W. W. Doherty with the tenth phone line. This was a single house. Shortly after this first venture in telephonic communication here the Restigouche Telephone and Electric Co. was organized. Records indicate that David Richards was the first president of the company while W. W. Doherty was the firms secretary.
